Taking tabletop to new heights…

February saw Rob Payton directing a new Baltika Breweries spot for the Russian market in our studio in Cape Town. This rather interesting and usual commercial was awarded to Grinder Films & in-house Director/DOP Robert Payton by the Russian production house Park Production for the agency BBDO Moscow.

The concept for the female beer-market “Eve” commercial required a bar set to be constructed in the Grinder Studio in Cape Town and a glass-topped table loaded with fruit, bottles, glasses and jewelry was exploded into the air and the magic moments were captured at ultra high-speed on a Phantom Flex running at 2000 + FPS. For this purpose 2 tables were constructed. A “hero” table and a special SFX table. The SFX table was constructed with integrated digitally fired air-ram systems to achieve the synchronous, explosive lift required.

Rob comments: “I wanted to achieve as much as possible in camera so, in conjunction with cinefx, we designed an hydraulic exploding table. We then had a series of rigs made that would allow us to replicate the action of the bottles and fruit in close up. Needless to say that during the 2 day shoot there were many broken glasses, bottles and lots of beer flying around. The table didn’t look so great at the end either”

The commercial was shot entirely on the Phantom Flex with a selection of Macros and Master Primes. All equipment came ex Media Film Service in Cape Town. Art Director on the job was MJ Botha from Alchemy & Liquid Stylist was Chris van der Merwe.
Food Stylist was Sam Linsell and the tables & SFX  were care of CineFX.
Offline editor was Tim Goodwin of Premiere Post and the Grade & Online were completed at Black Ginger in Cape Town.

The commercial introduces a new flavor to the Carlsberg range and is currently on screens across Russia.

We hope you enjoy the result!
